Nightlife in Berkeley

Where to Have Fun in Berkeley After Dark

Being a Berkeley student can be tough. Competitive classes, rushing frats, projects, and club events can pile on the stress. This is why it’s good to take the time to enjoy yourself when you get the chance. It’s also a great excuse to explore more of Berkeley.

For a college town, if can feel like there’s not a ton to do off-campus after the sun goes down. Fortunately, we’ve pulled together some awesome places worth checking out if you’re looking to dance, play, or just chill.

Jupiter

Jupiter is one of the most popular spots in all of Berkeley for students and locals alike. Even if you don’t (or can’t) drink, there’s a lot to enjoy. Delicious and flavorful pizzas and live music come together to make this place worth checking out. Unless it’s too cold outside, you definitely want to show up early to grab a good table on the back patio. It’s a great spot to hit up if you’re flying solo or even if you have a large group.

Pappy's

Pappy’s is a great location if you’re looking to watch or celebrate a big Cal game or even if you just want to party and have fun. What makes Pappy’s unique is that on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday it goes beyond being just a local college bar and transforms into a night club (21 and over only) with DJs, bottle service, and two floors for dancing. It’s also close to the dorms so you avoid a long trek back home after the festivities end.

Ashkenaz

If you’re looking for a bit more of a Berkeley vibe infused with your dance club then you should head on over to Ashkenaz. While the crowd here skews a bit older (though all ages are welcome), it’s seriously the best option in town if you have an eclectic taste in music. Check their calendar to see what’s coming up as most of the time their shows have student discounts. It’s far from campus in West Berkeley but you can take the 52 AC transit bus to get here from downtown.

Kip's

Kip’s has been like a rite of passage for Cal students over the years. From your first pledge event to your first drink, Kip’s is a place where awkward memories are made. What sets Kip’s apart is its great trivia night. It’s a great opportunity to bond with new roommates or make new friends. Just like Pappy’s it’s close to the dorms so it’s an easy (and safe) trip back home when the fun and games end.

Tupper & Reed

Tupper & Reed is fantastic if you find yourself in the downtown area with time to kill before a show or dinner (particularly if you’re waiting in line at one of Berkeley’s many popular dinner spots). It’s worth checking this place out for the atmosphere alone. The old English pub interior meshed with the live music and extensive selection of mixed drinks can make it hard to want to leave. Just make sure you don’t miss reservation at Angeline’s next door.

Freight & Salvage

If you’re a music fan seeking out more of a folk, country, and jazz vibe then Freight & Salvage downtown is what you’re looking for. They also offer half-price tickets to those 21 and younger so it’s a great deal for most Cal students.

The UC Theatre

For the longest time, the UC Theatre was shut down. Fortunately, it has finally been renovated and reopened. It’s recent opening means they’re trying extra hard to bring in some amazing bands to draw attention and this works to your benefit. Depending the show you’ll have access to seating or standing/dancing room on the floor. Keep an eye on their calendar for the best time to check it out.

Eudemonia

If your preferred method of entertainment comes in the form of video, board, or card games then Eudemonia is the place for you. As the primary social hub for Berkeley’s gamer community, Eudemonia regularly hosts events for all types of games. If you’re looking to meet your fellow Cal gamers this should be your first stop.

Berkeley Repertory Theatre

If live theatre is your thing, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre needs to be on your list. This isn’t some third-rate local playhouse, The Berkeley Rep has been the launchpad for some major shows (including the Broadway hit American Idiot). In addition, Berkeley Rep also has more intimate shows designed for smaller audiences if that’s what you prefer. They also have special pricing for attendees 30 and younger so as a student you can find some pretty good deals on some really great shows. If you love the idea of a night at the theatre (or if you’ve never been to the theatre before) don’t miss this place.

924 Gilman

924 Gilman is an integral part of the Berkeley music scene. Don’t let the photos and stories scare you away, this place is often misunderstood and (as a result) overlooked by non-locals. If you’re looking to tap into Berkeley’s underground music scene or just want to check out where bands like Green Day and The Offspring got their start you have to make time for 9224 Gilman. The best part is that all ages are welcome. Like Ashkenaz, it’s located in South Berkeley away from campus but you can hop on AC Transit’s 52 bus on Shattuck and University (next to the McDonalds) to get there and back home after.
